Audience Profile

Audience Profile

Our target audience is that of a wide range, generally young adults to adults. We intend to draw this target audience with the usage of a broad variety of components and techniques that appeal to a vast audience, such as themes of action and adventure along with a light-hearted comedic element.

Above is a visual example of the general target audience for our Media Studies AS Level film project.

In more detail, this involves individuals who are interested in combined themes conventionally found throughout particular sub-genres (such as the mixture of violence conventionally found in action films, survival themes common within post-apocalyptic movies, humourous elements within comedy films, the display of traditionally explicit components such as drugs, brutality, etc). Because of this specific addition, it may be more popular amongst young adults than their older counterparts, not to mention the lack of female characters may not interest female viewers as much.

This fusion of a wide array of genres hints at a group who is knowledgeable about and familiar with the media and film industry although our target audience is not limited to that; we also intend for this movie to be entertaining for casual watchers who are generally not as involved with the film industry as others.

Fans of post-apocalyptic or action movies are given top priority however, as this film will involve several elements unique to those genres, specifically fans of the Mad Max series as our film project is influenced by it to an extent*

Editing Analysis

Editing Analysis

In this film trailer ( World War Z ), we can see the demonstration of excellent editing and camera shots to build tension throughout the opening scene. There is a great amount of shots in this sequence, with many of them having a shorter duration to help build the intensity of the narrative, the imminent danger of the mutated zombies outside and the rest of humanity is trying to hang on for dear life.

Throughout the Trailer & Movie the editing technique used is Continuity editing, continuity editing is used to make a range of different camera shots and transitions invincible and unnoticeable, it also supports the narrative and especially helps add drama and suspense. most of the movie consist of these techniques of continuity of editing, Action Match ( Opening a door cuts to shot of him stepping out of door ). Shot/Reverse Shot ( Conversation scene from over the shoulder shot from both characters ). Reaction Shot ( Cut to someones reaction ). eye Line Match ( when the character looks at something then it cuts to a shot of that object from the characters point of view. Other techniques used in the trailer and the movie are mostly consisting of the following transitions ( the transition between two shots ) straight cuts which is when there is no visible transition and it just changes to the other shot. The only other really notable transition is the jump cut which is when it shortens the shot time and it shows certain stages of the scene. Without Continuity Editing the movie itself would not come together as well.

When my group starts to film our opening scene we are going to use continuity editing to allow all of our shots move fluidly and let the cuts and different shots be unnoticeable. This will effect our movie opening by making our movie look professional and not cheap or not edited correctly. With all this editing we are going to need a variety of shots to create a interesting movie opening and not just a boring long dragged out selection of similar shots. When we edit our movie we are going to make it fast paced to link with the danger and car idea as it will add dramas and suspense to our movie openeing. With our movi being shot in the desert we are going to need to add a vibrant or warm layer ontop of all of our shots which will be editied in Adobe Premiere. We will also use some slow motion shots to our movie which will be dine by shooting the scene with 60fps and when in premire playing the shot or scene at 24fps addingthat enhanced clarity and slow motion shot to our movie, these slow motion shots will add to the suspense of our movie. With all of these editing techniques and variety of camera shots and angles our movie will be a fast paced action packed thriller, and hopefully will get me and my group that well desrved Grade A.

Soundtrack Analysis

Soundtrack Analysis

In order to create a action, thriller, post apocalyptic film opening it is vital for us to have a soundtrack which echoes the genre of the film and mirrors the actions which are occurring on screen at the same time. This helps to support and emphasize the images being shown and add more action, helping my group to add suspense and more action.

Similar films to our idea such as Mad Max Fury Road, which is essentially about Max teaming up with Furiousa a rebel to try to take down the corrupt society of the mad max world. The film has many action scenes and the soundtrack to match is fantastic. The music itself helps to build the drama and suspense in sections leading up to the initial explosion or the car chase beginning. The music is very loud and has a fast pace to match the cars. slowly building at the start of the movie, however the drum beat builds as something important is about to happen on the screen, this helps to emphasize its significance.

In these scenes we are  able to see the matching visuals and the accompanying audio. As the music slowly builds it suddenly drops at a tense moment, it then continues, with each drum beat getting significantly more forceful and slightly louder. The presence of guitar override the music at points alerting the audience to the immediate danger. However the beat continues in the background ascending with each extreme attempt to escape.

Opening title sequence analysis

Opening Title Sequence Analysis

The First Title:- A Kennedy Miller Mitchell Production This title comes immediately after a pitch black screen stunning the viewer, this is typical for most movies as it interests the viewer. The colour scheme for the titles are very rusty, dirty run down all relating to the cars and the genre of the movie which is post apocalyptic, The are cracks and scratched metal all over. The title texture is Chrome which links to the entire car idea although the background is still the same as the production crew scenes.

After about 3 seconds of the title saying mad max on its own a small explosion occurs and the words Fury Road in molten metal appear in front of the Mad Max in chrome with a large bang. The overall affect is very eery and very violent as the title presents you with very violent thoughts. When the molten title Fury Road comes the rusty, dirty and scratched background. The opening titles are very important as it introduces the genre and other various aspects of the movie within the first 2-4 minutes. Though the film is titled Mad Max, the phrase "Fury Road" comes from the War Boy Nux. As a War Boy he knows he is at the end of his shortened lifespan but Nux still wants to accomplish something that will be remembered after his passing. Though Max and Furiosa are usually seen as the protagonists of this film, I found Nux to go through the greatest transformation, a hero's journey to realize his "manifest destiny."

These shots are from the following three movies and are a mixture of a Long Shot/Panerama:- A Long Shot allows the viewer to see what is happening in the scene or even showing the viewer where the scene is, these are examples of long shots from the movie Mad Max Fury Road, as you can see from the following shots you can tell that the scene is based in a desert, isolated, unpopulated expanse of land emphasising the feeling of isolation.

I AM LEGEND TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

I AM LEGEND

Film Opening Textual Analysis

Genre/hybrid genre:  Action/Thriller/Post Apocalyptic The movie itself is a very good idea, Will Smith is the last man on earth supposedly and the entire movie is about Will Smith finding new species of animals and zombies and trying to survive. The movie is very well edited and uses almost perfect examples of Match on Action. Narrative: The story is told in a very smooth way, the editing and different camera shots used is almost unnoticeable unless you are a media student looking out for them.

Location: The entire movie is based in new York, you can tell as famous landmarks are shown throughot the movie, although to add to the effect of isolation the famous landmarks and either broken, damaged, or gone.

Characters: Will Smith is the main Character and he has his dog max who you build up a connection with during the film but sadly he dies saving Will Smith which adds sadness and drama to the movie as-well.

Voice Over: There is no narration but that is used to add to the impact of isolation, Will Smith usually talks to max so you can get a feeling of what h is going to do but the movie itself is very visual.

Pacing: The pace rapidly changes through the movie as the drama builds like whe will smith is in his car the pacing is very fast and match on action is used well.

On-screen graphics/captions: No text is used which is odd for a movie although is may add to the feeling od isolation as the title of the movie is only revealed at the end of the movie.

Editing & post production (can include special effects): Match on action is used alot as the entire movie has to flow very smoothly so we can see whats hapening around the main character, like when the character looks at his watch it cuts to a shot of his watch. Over the shoulder shot is used also

Music and other sound effects: Most of the movie is silent or quite to enhance the felling of isolation which links with the movie.

Camerawork: The shots change continously to make the movie run smoother. With the style of movie also it is crucial for the audience to see what is happening all around o the movie wont make sense.
